Designing for Tablet - Converge Mobile

Overview

Converge Mobile allows merchants to accept credit, debit, and cash payments anywhere. The problem? The tablet app was simply a blown up version of the mobile app.

What's working, and what's not?

Our Mixpanel data and app store downloads showed that over 35% of Converge Mobile users were using a tablet device, and Converge Mobile was not optimized for tablets. 

​

The typical use flow within Converge Mobile: 

1. Type in cost of items one by one

2. "Checkout" 

3. Payment info

4. Email receipt

So, some possible enhancements

1. Merchant catalog of goods

2. Improve use of space on tablet

3. Conduct user testing

4. Portrait and landscape views

The focus: take advantage of extra real estate on tablets and improve merchant experience through added catalog feature.

It's all about the process

Iteration is one of the key principles of User Experience Design. The first thing I like to do when presented with a design problem is grab my sketchbook and a pen and sketch out as many ideas and flows as I can come up with.

For this design problem, I explored a dozen variations on my idea shown here. I accounted for device orientation, device sizes, our defined user personas and the user needs. 

​

Once I exhaust all possibilities, I scrutinize each idea and eliminate most of them. When its down to a few solid ideas its time for user testing. 

​

The best advice I have received in my career: "You are not your user" 

Testing

Once I had a top idea flushed out, I set out to test it with real users. 

​

I created wireframes to test with and created a UserTesting.com session to get feedback and user insights. 

​

I had 8 testers to explore the wireframes and flow. Every tester was a business owner who had experience running transactions at their business.

Main questions

​

1. Is the product catalog easy to use and understand?

2. Is the screen space being used effectively? What about the information architecture? 

​

​

3. Do the landscape and portrait layouts both meet user needs? 

Findings

​

Adding a catalog item to a sale was straightforward, but the process of manually creating the catalog felt heavy on the user.

​

Users liked the large font size for a tablet screen and felt there was ample white space. The icon to open the left menu was not clear to most of the testers. 

​

Testers agreed that both layouts were equal and effective.

Final Presentation

Based on the feedback from user testing, I made some adjustments and further iterated on my design. To aid in catalog creation, I added the ability to save an item to the catalog directly from the sale page. 

​

I also explored replacing the product logo with another icon for opening the left menu. Further research showed that our customers who already use Converge Mobile were familiar and accustomed to using the logo, however, which the testers were unaware of. 

​

At the end of my internship I presented all of my research, findings, and final designs to the project team and my manager. Since then, the project team has moved ahead and implemented a lot of the work that I did during my internship.
